Telangana plans to link death registration records with its voter database to automatically identify and remove deceased electors after verification. Officials currently rely on booth-level officers and Form 7 applications as the ongoing Special Intensive Revision identifies discrepancies in electoral rolls

Hyderabad: Plans are afoot to link the birth and death registration database with voter ID records in Telangana. The move is aimed at keeping electoral rolls updated by removing the details of electors whose deaths have been officially registered.

Under the system, which is in its initial phase, once an elector’s details are entered in the death registration records, the information will be electronically shared with the voter database. “Upon verification, the deceased person’s voter details will be removed from the list. This initiative will be rolled out in a couple of months,” said a Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) official.

At present, officials depend on booth-level officers to make field visits, gather information about deceased voters and subsequently remove their names from the voters’ list. In addition, family members of the deceased can fill out and submit Form 7 to have the name deleted from the electoral roll.

As many as 9,22,229 voters were categorised as deceased during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The highest number of deceased voters, 1,56,392, was reported in Hyderabad, followed by 88,647 in Rangareddy district and 72,314 in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

As of June 10, 2026, Telangana had a total of 3,38,26,448 electors, of whom 73,39,235 were identified under the Absent, Shifted, Death and Double votes (ASD) category. Of the total electorate, 2,64,87,213 voters submitted their enumeration forms as part of the SIR.

Anomalies, including mismatched names and incorrect ages when compared with the previous SIR, were identified in the enumeration forms submitted by 60,50,918 voters. Another 32,36,659 electors could not link themselves to the 2002 SIR list.
