Hyderabad: Former Minister and Telangana State Women’s Commission chairperson V Sunitha Laxma Reddy said here on Saturday that the police department has taken a series of initiatives for the safety and security of the women and became a role model for many States in the country.

Participating in a meeting at the State police headquarters here, she appreciated the police for introducing several technology-driven initiatives for the women’s safety. She complimented the police for organising various programmes to create awareness among the women about cybercrimes and instilling confidence among them.

She advised officials to strengthen the NRI cell to deal with the cases pertaining to harassment by NRI husbands. Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy, who was also present at the meeting, said the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was giving priority for the safety of women and accordingly Women Safety Wing was established.

At the same time, SHE Teams were constituted in 2014 and Bharosa centres were started in 2016. Telangana was the only State that implemented 33 per cent reservation for the women in recruitment in the department.

Effective policing would be possible only with the help of the people and as many as six lakh surveillance cameras were installed in the three police commissionerates in the city. Mahendar Reddy said necessary steps were also taken for the safety of women in all the offices of the police department.

He said the department was taking stern action against those who are indulging in crime against women and more importance was given to prevent child marriages.
