Hyderabad: Telangana is among the top 10 States in the country that are actively supporting the use of e-vehicles with as many as 3,031 e-vehicles, mostly bikes and cars, presently being used in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Warangal and Karimnagar.

The use of e-vehicles in the State is poised to increase further in the coming days with the bike and car enthusiasts evincing more interest to buy these vehicles in the wake of rising fuel prices, officials of Telangana State Renewable Enginery Development Corporation (TSREDCO) Limited said.

Since exemption was provided on registration of these vehicles, officials said that more people have started to evince interest in buying them. One electric two-wheeler company had in fact registered over 30,000 bookings, the officials pointed out. As the electric vehicles are zero-emission ones coupled with rising fuel prices, they have been catching the attention of most motorists, an official of TSREDCO said.

Presently, there are 50 charging stations in the State and Rs 18 is collected for each unit of charging. A popular SUV brand vehicle requires 35 units for travelling 350 km while a three-wheeler needs 16 units for travelling 110 km and a bike requires three units for 40 km.

The official said an exhibition of e-vehicles organised in the city a few days ago has received an overwhelming response from the motorists, with many turning up in large numbers to have a feel of these vehicles. According to data compiled by IESA, the electric vehicle industry consumed over 5 GWh of batteries in 2018 in India. This number is likely to be over 36 GWh by 2025. During the 2020-2027 period, the EV sector is estimated to consume about 250 GWh of batteries.

The ‘Telangana Electric Vehicle & Energy Storage Policy 2020-2030’ builds upon Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) II scheme being implemented since April 2019 by the Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India, where it suggested States offer fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to further improve the adoption of electric vehicles.

With 3,031 vehicles, Telangana is in eighth place in the top 10 States that are supporting e-vehicles, according to Central government data. It said Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were placed in the top one and two places with over 19,270 and 13,515 e-vehicles respectively while Maharashtra and Rajasthan are in third and fourth places with 9,393 and 6,721 e-vehicles respectively.

Delhi is in fifth place with 6,413 e-vehicles while Uttar Pradesh is in sixth place with 6,022 e-vehicles and Andhra Pradesh is in seventh place with 3,325 e-vehicles. Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are in ninth and tenth places with 2,953 and 2,615 e-vehicles.
