Telangana sailors to take part in Singapore Youth Sailing Championships
The Singapore Youth Championships already have 200 entries spread across two fleets Gold and Silver from 25 countries and Rizwan and Lahiri have been selected for the Gold Fleet. They will be sailing the sub-junior under 15 Optimist Class of Boats

HYDERABAD: Telangana squad to take part in for the Singapore Youth Sailing Championships starting from March 14 was named here on Thursday.
The team comprising Rizwan Mohammad of Pattigada studying at Udbhav School, Lahiri Komaravelly of Rasoolpura studying at Udbhav School and Vinod Dandu of Govt School Nallagutta has been selected by the Sports Authority of India and the Yachting Association of India as part of the Indian contingent for this international event.
The Singapore Youth Championships already have 200 entries spread across two fleets Gold and Silver from 25 countries and Rizwan and Lahiri have been selected for the Gold Fleet. They will be sailing the sub-junior under 15 Optimist Class of Boats.
The team will be led by the experienced team manager Dharani Laveti also of Hyderabad who last led them to the Cadet World Championships at Plymouth, UK. Dharani has been a National Champion herself in the Junior 420 Class and is now pursuing her undergraduate studies at St Francis College, Begumpet.
The team was coached under Suheim Sheikh who will be accompanying them as National Coach to the prestigious Singapore Youth Sailing Championships. This team was trained at Suchitra Academy, Kompally under fitness coaches who train the finest Badminton athletes in India.
Rizwan Mohammad was 35th out of 101 sailors at the Langkawi International and Lahiri 38 overall and 12th girl sailor. Both responded confidently when asked if they will perform better at Singapore.
The team will join National Champion Shreya Krishna from Chennai and Samriddhi Batham from Bhopal in Singapore amongst others to comprise the Indian representation of 8 sailors at the Singapore event.
Rizwan is currently ranked India No.1 in boys under 15 and Lahiri ranked No.3 in the girls. Vinod is ranked No.4.
“This is our third international and we have worked hard on our fitness and the Yoga at the Yacht Club and nutrition has made us a lot fitter and stronger”, said a beaming Lahiri and Rizwan in unison. “We are looking forward to making India proud with a great performance”, they added.
“This year in the under 15, Telangana Sailing Association has 10 sailors in the top 18 and 4 in the top 7 ranking sailors, a performance we are very proud of”, said Sheikh who is the president of the Telangana Sailing Association and Director High Performance at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad where the sailors train at Hussain Sagar
