Nalgonda: Sanitation services in the Nalgonda municipality came to a halt as over 300 sanitation workers went on a lightning strike from Thursday morning. The sudden interruption in waste collection has led to a large-scale accumulation of garbage across the city, raising health concerns among residents.
The city, which generates an estimated 300 metric tonnes of garbage daily, is witnessing heaps of uncollected waste in the market area and the main roads. Left unattended for more than a day, the garbage may decompose adding to the risk of disease outbreaks.
The striking workers are demanding the release of their salaries, which have not been paid for two months, along with the payment of arrears pending for nine months. Led by the local unit of the CITU, the sanitation workers staged a dharna to press their demands.
Municipal authorities have acknowledged the issue but have yet to provide a clear timeline for the disbursement of funds. Officials cite administrative delays and budget constraints as reasons for the pending payments.
