Nirmal: A shepherd reportedly managed to escape from the jaws of a leopard by climbing a tree when the big cat chased him while he was grazing sheep in the forests of Ravindranagar village in Sarangapur mandal on Friday.

Locals said the shepherd, Sai, was grazing a herd of sheep in the forests located in Sahyadri hills as he would do the job daily. A leopard, which was on the prowl in the bushes, attacked his herd of sheep. The leopard killed two sheep and then tried to attack the shepherd.

The shepherd, however, fled the spot and could save his life by quickly climbing a tree. He got down from the tree after making sure that the leopard returned to the forests. He alerted locals about the incident.

The locals in turn informed officials of the Forest Department about the presence of the leopard in the forests.
