Hyderabad: The State government on Tuesday announced a slew of measures aimed at ensuring critical healthcare services continue to remain available for Covid positive pregnant women across all government healthcare facilities in Telangana, during the ongoing Covid-19 third wave.

As part of these efforts, the State government has decided to establish exclusive Operation Theatres (OTs) and wards in all government hospitals for Covid positive pregnant women. Specific instructions have been issued to all government healthcare institutions in the districts to ensure Covid positive pregnant women have access to all healthcare facilities locally and avoid unnecessary referrals to higher tertiary care facilities, especially to Gandhi Hospital and Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad.

“No Covid positive pregnant women should be denied healthcare services at government hospitals during the ongoing Covid third wave. Covid positive general patients too must not be rejected of any kins of healthcare services in districts. We will create special operation theatres and wards for such individuals. Heads of government hospitals in districts must avoid referring Covid positive patients to Hyderabad,” Health Minister, T Harish Rao, during a virtual review meeting on Covid preparedness with all stakeholders in the health department on Tuesday, said.

To ensure critical healthcare facilities including emergency care and surgeries are available for all Covid positive patients, the State government has instructed hospital superintendents, medical officers who are in-charge of PHCs, UPHCs and DM&HOs to establish separate OTs and wards for them.

Health Minister in the review meeting also directed the health department to intensify and expedite the ongoing Covid vaccination drive in Telangana. “We must intensify our efforts to administer Covid vaccines to 100 percent of eligible beneficiaries across all the age groups in Telangana. During the upcoming Sankranti festival holidays, youngsters between 15 years and 17 years of age will be in their homes. Our frontline health care workers must ensure to administer Covid vaccines to such children in the coming days,” Harish Rao directed the Health Department.
