Hyderabad: With an objective to inculcate reading habit along with increasing basic competencies of reading among children and make them independent readers, the School Education department is all set to kick start a 100-day Reading campaign for students of Classes 1 to 9 in all schools in the State from February 5.
As part of the READ (Read, Enjoy and Develop) programme, all teachers should ensure students read age-appropriate books in the school library every day. Besides, all schools must allocate one library period daily for each class.
The schools have also been instructed to form a committee comprising of five students for each class in the high school and a single committee for the primary school. The committee has been tasked to monitor the library reading habits among students besides issuing books to the students and maintaining record of the same. It has also been asked to display a list of fluent readers in the classroom so as to encourage other students.
The library week will be organised in all schools from February 14 to 21 and Mother Language Day will be celebrated on February 21. The schools have been instructed to conduct a reading competition every Saturday and reading festival every month involving parents, community members and School Management Committee.
“While Mana Ooru-Mana Badi programme will develop and strengthen infrastructure in government schools, this campaign will help improve the reading and learning skills of the students which will eventually improve the quality of education,” said S Vinayak, nodal officer of the programme.
