Hyderabad: In a major step towards establishing good biomedical waste management practices in government hospitals, the State government on Thursday sanctioned Rs.68.31 crore to establish Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) in 20 government hospitals across the State.
As part of the initiative, the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPSCB) has accorded administrative sanction for Rs. 68.59 crore, which includes a capital cost of Rs.52.59 crore to construct the STPs and operational cost for a period of three years worth Rs.15.72 crore. The 20 government hospitals, where the STPs are coming up, have a total bed strength of 15,450.
TSPSC Member Secretary Neetu Prasad said in an order that the State Health department would be responsible for budget allocation towards recurring expenditure that includes operation and maintenance with an assurance to run STPs continuously. The Health department will also submit an action plan on the timelines for construction and commissioning of the STPs.
The health department will provide a pre-treatment facility for laboratory, Operation Theatre (OT) and laundry washings before letting into STP and also will meet the outlet discharge standards as per the BioMedical Waste Rules, 2016 and its amendments.
“Efforts are on to prepare a plan to establish STPs in all Government hospitals in Telangana. The establishment of STPs is a major step towards having a fool-proof system to handle bio-medical waste in Government hospitals. We also urge private hospitals, which do not have this facility, to establish STPs in their premises,” Health Minister T Harish Rao said on Thursday.
