Telangana: Unseasonal rains soak Adilabad, devastate farmers’ crops

Unseasonal rains in Adilabad district have damaged sorghum and paddy at procurement centers, causing losses for farmers. With rainfall averaging 25.8 mm, affected growers urge officials to buy their grains, as hopes for profits fade.

Adilabad: Parts of the erstwhile Adilabad district experienced light to moderate rainfall for the second consecutive night on Thursday, causing significant damage to sorghum and paddy stored at procurement centers, impacting farmers’ livelihoods.

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society’s weather report, Adilabad district recorded an average rainfall of 25.8 mm. Narnoor mandal saw the highest rainfall at 125.6 mm, followed by Talamadugu mandal with 57.3 mm. Adilabad Rural and Tamsi mandals received over 50 mm, while Indervelli, Gudihathnoor, and Adilabad Urban mandals recorded above 20 mm.

Kumram Bheem district reported an average rainfall of 23.9 mm. Wankidi mandal received the highest at 53.1 mm, followed by Koutala and Bejjur mandals with 46.7 mm and 43 mm, respectively. Jainoor, Sirpur (U), Kerameri, Sirpur (T), and Chintalamanepalli mandals saw rainfall between 20 mm and 30 mm.

Mancherial district recorded an average of 17.6 mm, with Kasipet mandal receiving the highest at 43.9 mm. Dandepalli, Luxettipet, Hajipur, Bellampalli, and Jaipur mandals reported over 20 mm. Nirmal district averaged 9.4 mm, with Mudhole mandal recording the highest at 19.4 mm.

The unseasonal rains damaged jowar and paddy grains stored at procurement centers in Adilabad and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts, leading to significant losses for farmers. Affected growers urged officials to purchase the grains without conditions, expressing frustration as the unexpected rains shattered their hopes of earning profits.
