Hyderabad: The State government has requested the Ministry of Jal Shakthi (MoJS) to verify whether the unapproved Veligonda project was eligible for funding under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana – Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme PMKSY-AIBP.

In a letter to the Commissioner, State Projects Wing, Ministry of Jal Shakthi, Telangana Irrigation department Engineer-in-Chief C Muralidhar said the Veligonda project in Andhra Pradesh was being considered in the list of projects for funding under PMKSY-AIBP during 2021-26.

It is also learnt that the physical monitoring of the proposed project was to be completed by Friday and report to be made available by September 3. He stated that the project was taken up by the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh based on surplus waters of Krishna River and does not have any clearance of Central Water Commission (CWC).

Muralidhar said that it was shown as unapproved project in the gazette notification dated July 15, 2021. “There is no allocation of water to this project by KWDT-I. It envisages diversion of Krishna water to other basins and is being vehemently opposed by Telangana before KWDT-II,” he said.

“We request the Ministry to consider whether funds under AIBP for the unapproved Veligonda project diverting Krishna water to outside basin
is correct,” he said. Muralidhar urged the Ministry to verify whether the project was eligible for funding under PMKSY-AIBP.

A few days ago, the Telangana has urged Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to restrain Andhra Pradesh (AP) from executing the unauthorized Veligonda project and adding new components to it which are intended to divert water outside basin.
