Telangana: Villagers lock up gram panchayat officials over irregularities

Khammam: Residents of a village in Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka’s Madhira constituency locked officials inside the gram panchayat office accusing them of not giving Indiramma houses to deserving people.
The incident took place at Kishtapuram village of Mudigonda mandal in the constituency. Villagers who staged a protest outside the GP office complained officials had allotted Indiramma houses to those who had lands and government jobs.
Speaking to the media at Bonakal former ZP chairman Lingala Kamal Raju complained that the Congress government boasts of sanctioning Indiramma houses to the poor under Praja Palana. But the houses were being sanctioned to Congress party activists alone.
Similarly, Kamepalli CPM mandal secretary B Srinivas said that a survey conducted by the party in Lalya Thanda revealed that there were about 35 homeless families but only 16 houses have been sanctioned for the thanda village.
In Kothagudem, residents of Mahamad Nagar in Chandrugonda mandal men and women expressed anger at the officials who came to survey the village on Tuesday as the deserving people did not get Indiramma houses. They confronted the officials for not allotting Indiramma houses to the poor in the village adopted by Aswaraopet MLA Jare Adinarayana.
The residents of another village Ayyannapalem in the mandal alleged that Indiramma houses were given to those who had houses in the village. They entered into heated arguments with the village secretary complaining that Indiramma committee members and ruling party leaders granted houses to those who gave bribes to them.
