Hyderabad: A Telugu woman is battling for her life after being the victim of a hit-and-run road accident in Denton city of Texas in the United States, according to reports reaching here on Monday.

The injured woman was identified as Deepthi Vangavolu, while another woman sustained non-lethal injuries and is being treated in a hospital, US media reports said.

Deepthi Vangavolu and her friend who were about to reach home on foot, were hit by an unidentified vehicle. The Denton police sought police help in “identifying the driver of a vehicle that filed to stop after striking two pedestrians”.

A local media organisation nbcdfw.com quoted an Indian student as saying that the seriously injured woman (Deepthi Vangavolu) sustained a deep head injury, while the other woman sustained grievous injuries and was being operated upon.

According the Linkedin profile of Deepthi Vangavolu, she is pursuing the masters in Computer and Information Science in the University of North Texas and completed her B Tech from Narasaropeta Engineering College in March 2023. Possibly she hails from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

A press release from the Denton police put the time of accident at 2.12 a.m. on Saturday (April 12) and that the accident took place in the 2300 block of Carril Al Lago drive, a residential streen near N. Bonnie Brae Stree and W. University Drive.

Witnesses reported that a dark-colored sedan struck two female pedestrians in the roadway and did not stop. The vehicle was last seen driving north on N. Bonnie Brae Street.

Both pedestrians were transported to a hospital. One woman suffered life-threatening injuries while the second woman’s injuries were minor.

Police have tentatively identified the vehicle as a dark Koa Optima, which has a missing or damaged front grill and likely a headlight damage.
