Hyderabad: Tempers ran high in the Assembly on Tuesday as BRS and Congress legislators clashed over allegations of personal defamation during the Motion of Thanks on the Governor’s Address.

The confrontation began when BRS working president KT Rama Rao said the ruling Congress was targeting Opposition leaders. BRS MLAs and leaders were being attacked in broad daylight, he said, and referred to an incident during the Sarpanch elections in Kamareddy, where a Congress leader allegedly drove a tractor over a BRS-backed candidate. Reacting immediately, Congress MLA from Yellareddy K Madan Mohan Rao denied the allegations and said the BRS working president was making false claims. He maintained that he had no role in the incident and attributed it to personal issues.

However, BRS members countered his statement and termed the incident objectionable. Irked by the BRS members’ remarks, the Congress MLA raised his voice and asked them to return to their seats. Intervening in the exchange, Speaker G Prasad Kumar gave him the microphone and asked him to continue his speech. “How can they take my name and comment on the government?” Madan Mohan Rao asked.

Later, when the Speaker allowed Rama Rao to resume his address, he said, “I did not take any member’s name. I spoke about an incident in Kamareddy and fail to understand why the Congress MLA is fuming.”

Rama Rao further said that Madan Mohan Rao had exposed the Congress government’s inefficiency. When Congress members questioned this remark, he said, “It was Madan Mohan Rao who wrote a letter to the World Bank seeking funds for constituency development.”
