Karimnagar: He may be just 10 years old but Guduri Siddartha Reddy stands tall after setting a record of sorts – trekking some of the toughest mountains on the Western Ghats in Karnataka. Siddartha trekked his way to the peaks of two of the toughest mountains, Kumara Parvatha at 5,617 feet in Mangaluru district and Tadiandamol at 5,735 feet in Coorg district recently.
The achievement is all the more significant given the fact that the boy neither has any previous experience in trekking nor did he undergo any training before taking on the mountains. He scaled Kumara Parvatha first and then Tadiandamol, all in just two days covering a distance of 30 km beginning January 15.
A native of Madhapur of Ganneruvaram mandal, Siddartha may well stake claim for the youngest person tag to trek the tough mountains. He is a student of Class 5 in Thakshasheela Public School, Lalaguda, Hyderabad, and his father, Santhosh Reddy, works as development manager in Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
He had the backing of Backpackers and City Freaks (BCF) that arranges backpacking, adventure, outdoor and trekking events, on his adventure trip.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Siddartha said he started trekking at 5 pm on January 15 from the 5,000-year-old Kukke Shri Subramanya temple and had to spend the night in the mountains after walking six km since Army officials would not allow trekking during the night time. He started at 5 am on January 16 and completed the trek up the first mountain at 3 pm. At 6 am on January 17, he started trekking Tadiandamol and completed it in the evening at Pushpagiri wildlife sanctuary.
Siddartha is also passionate about shuttle badminton and is undergoing coaching at SS Badminton Academy, Tarnaka, in Hyderabad for the past two years. “He has also been undergoing fitness training since the lockdown. Since his fitness level was very good, the badmintion academy suggested that Siddarth try out trekking, and based on their advice, I encouraged him to take the trip with the help of BCF,” said Santhosh Reddy
For his age, Siddartha is pretty clear on his goals and wants to scale great heights in badminton, notwithstanding his recent tryst with the mountains.
