Hyderabad: Tension prevailed on the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) campus on Tuesday night after two student groups confronted each other over posters on Palestine, resulting in police cases against nine students, including Students Union president Vikas Porika.
The EFLU Students Union, along with Fraternity Movement, had called for a ‘Palestine Solidarity March’ on the campus, for which permission was denied by the university administration.
However, contrary to instructions and despite officials expressing objections to banners reading ‘EFLU is with Palestine’ and Palestinian flags on campus, some students gathered for a rally. This prompted the university to seek police assistance.
The trouble began when the ABVP EFLU unit raised objections to the foreign flag on campus and attempted to take down posters at the canteen, resulting in an aggressive confrontation between the two student groups.
Police swung into action to prevent the rally, during which a scuffle ensued. However, the situation was brought under control.
While the Students Union and Fraternity Movement EFLU unit condemned ABVP’s actions, ABVP demanded disciplinary action against the students and organisations involved in the march.
Meanwhile, taking a serious view of the incident, the EFLU administration said an enquiry will be conducted into the matter.
