Tension at Tank Bund as Ganesh Utsav Samithi protests barricading

Tension prevailed at Tank Bund after Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi members protested barricading and attempted to remove iron structures installed by GHMC and police. The protesters demanded that devotees be allowed to immerse Ganesh idols at Tank Bund.

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at Tank Bund on Monday as members of Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS) participated in a protest and tried to dismantle iron barricades erected by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and city police.

Trouble began around 11 am on Monday when a large contingent of BGUS members arrived at Tank Bund and encountered extensive iron barricading and large flex banners that were installed by Hyderabad City Police and GHMC.

The official banners declared a strict ban on idol immersions along the upper Tank Bund stretch.

The Utsav Samithi members moved to dismantle the structures (barricades) that were, according to them, established suddenly, without any prior notice.

Police intervened as BGUS members tried to unbolt and remove iron barricades fixed to the lake’s railings. The members raised slogans against GHMC.

BGUS general secretary Ravinuthala Shashidhar demanded that GHMC allow devotees to continue immersions at Tank Bund, despite TGSPCB submitting its report to the High Court that no contamination was found during Ganesh immersion in Hussain Sagar Lake.
