Vikarabad: Unable to digest their defeat in the gram panchayat elections, Congress leaders and cadres allegedly attacked BRS cadres at Pashapur village in Peddemul mandal on Friday night, triggering tension in the village.

Several BRS cadres sustained serious injuries with bleeding wounds in the attack. Despite repeated calls by the BRS cadres to the police, no immediate help arrived at the spot, they alleged.

BRS supported candidate Kavitha Bharath Kumar and her panel of ward members had emerged victorious in the first phase of the gram panchayat elections held in the village on December 11. Enraged over the defeat, Congress leaders allegedly targeted the newly elected BRS sarpanch and ward members.

A case has been registered at Peddemul police station based on a complaint filed by the BRS leaders. The injured were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Congress leaders also lodged a counter case against the BRS leaders, claiming that the latter attacked them. BRS leaders, however, maintained that they only tried to defend themselves from the assault by Congress cadres.

Police took several people from both sides into custody. The situation remained tense in the village till Saturday night.
