TGPCB study flags road dust as major pollutant

A TGPCB-IIT Hyderabad study has highlighted the contribution of road dust to PM10 and PM2.5 pollution. A workshop discussed improving mechanical road sweepers, with researchers noting silt deposition of 5 to 15 g/m² against an ideal level below 3 g/m².

Hyderabad: To disseminate the results of the study on silt removal efficiency by the mechanical road sweepers conducted by TGPCB with IIT Hyderabad, a workshop, ‘Improving the efficiency of the mechanical road sweepers to mitigate the road dust and to improve the air quality ’, was held.

The study was taken up based on the findings that road dust is contributing about 32 percent to PM10 and 26 percent to PM2.5. The silt deposition ranges from 5 to 15 g/m², whereas it should ideally be less than 3 g/m².


IIT Hyderabad Prof. Qureshi, PCB CEE B Raghu, NCAP Nodal Officer Dr D Prasad, and ES Jayasri, GHMC Additional Commissioner Ravi Kiran, Raghu Prasad of MMC, and Venugopal Reddy of CMC participated.
