Allapalli (Kothagudem): As tipplers in Telangana are creating a record of sorts in liquor consumption, filling the State’s coffers with huge funds accrued from liquor sales, a remote village in Kothagudem decided not to be a part of such frenzy.

As per a survey by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) Telangana’s boozers made per capita liquor spending of Rs 1, 623, which more than any other State in India. The village in question seems to have intended to stay away from such an infamous claim to fame.

Understanding the financial, health and social implications of liquor consumption the residents of Anamtogu gram panchayat in Allapalli mandal declared a war against liquor. They imposed a ban on sale and consumption of liquor in the village.

The war was led by women in the gram panchayat and guided by former mandal parishad president K Manju Bhargavi and former sarpanch Sammakka. They recently held a meeting in the village and passed a resolution endorsing the decision to ban liquor.

The resolution states that “In view of the well being of families and children an anonymous resolution has been passed banning liquor, arrack and chiguru (a kind of a drink brewed from toddy). The resolution applies to every family in the village”.

Speaking to Telangana Today Manju Bhargavi informed that it was decided to impose a penalty of Rs 20, 000 on any individual, family or a shop found to be selling liquor of any kind in future, in violation against the resolution.

The resolution copies have been distributed to each family in the gram panchayat. The women with the help of the local police also destroyed country made liquor making units in the gram panchayat, she said.

She further revealed that nearly 12 years ago the women and the elders banned liquor sale and consumption in the gram panchayat. But recently some people started making gudumba as a result youths and elders have been getting addicted to it.

Increased consumption of gudumba and other liquor has been leading to health issues and clashes in the families while the men are staying away from work. Sometimes liquor addiction causes deaths of men, hence it is decided to ban it, Manju Bhargavi added.
