Hyderabad: Three pharma companies from Hyderabad have entered into agreement with UN-backed Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), headquartered in Geneva, to manufacture and supply a generic version of Pfizer’s Covid-19 oral treatment Nirmatrelvir.
Aurobindo Pharma said it signed a sub-license agreement with MPP. Earlier, MPP signed voluntary licensing agreement with Pfizer for sub-licensing this Covid-19 treatment product to qualified generic drugmakers.
Nirmatrelvir in combination with ritonavir co-pack has received emergency use/conditional authorisation for Covid-19 treatment in certain populations by USFDA, the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (UKMHRA and nearly 50 other countries).
“Aurobindo Pharma has already developed and commercialised Ritonavir which is used as a booster along with Nirmatrelvir. We will soon make it available commercially at an affordable price after registration and approval in various countries including India,” said K Nithyananda Reddy, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Aurobindo Pharma.
MSN Group also entered into a licensing agreement with MPP and it will be launching the product under the brand name ‘PAXVID’ in India after receiving the approval from DCGI. Granules India said it has received a license from MPP to manufacture and market generic versions of Pfizer’s oral treatment. The product will be made at Granules manufacturing facilities in India that are approved by global regulatory agencies including USFDA.
