Hyderabad: Three members of a family from Hyderabad were killed and two others sustained serious injuries in a road accident in California, United States, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Nazia Salma (45), her 19-year-old daughter Hafeza Neha Shaikh, and her 14-year-old son Hafez Omer. The family are residents of Vani Nagar in Saidabad.
Nazia’s husband, Shaik Abdul Naveed, survived the crash along with the couple’s seven-year-old daughter, Khatija Shaikh. Both are undergoing treatment at a hospital in California.
According to Shaik Abdul Sayeed, father of Abdul Naveed, they learnt about the accident on Tuesday morning. He said the family repeatedly tried to contact his son in the morning, but could not reach him.
“After some time, the local police answered the phone and informed us about the accident. We were told that the car they were travelling in collided with another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle also died in the crash,” he said.
The family has appealed to the Union and Telangana governments to facilitate the travel of close relatives to California so they can be with the injured survivors. They also requested the authorities to help ensure the preservation of the bodies until family members arrive.
Majlis Bachao Tehreek spokesperson Amjedullah Khan visited the family at their residence and appealed to Union Minister for External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar to extend all possible assistance, including facilitating relatives’ travel to the United States and coordinating the repatriation of the bodies after completion of legal formalities.
