Kumram Bheem Asifabad: A three-member gang of Maharashtra, which was allegedly involved in duping the public under the guise of a treasure hunt by posing as godmen, was busted by Wankidi police. Liquid cash Rs 18.03 lakh were recovered from members of the gang. Disclosing details of the arrests to pressmen in Asifabad on Monday, Superintendent of Police K Suresh Kumar said that the accused were Chouhan Prakash, Panjab Rao and Babar Bikkaji, all residents of Ghatanji in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra. The complainant was Chatari Kamalakar, a resident of Ghat Jangaon village in Wankidi mandal.

The trio was held when they were moving suspiciously in Wankidi. On being interrogated, the three confessed to committing the crime to lead a lavish lifestyle by cheating the gullible public by forming the gang for quite a long time. They admitted that they won trust of Kamalakar by stating that his family members had a threat to their lives if the treasure was not brought out from the ground of his house.

The fake godmen disclosed that they extracted Rs 18.03 lakh from him in four phases under the pretext of the treasure hunt and performing certain rituals. They conducted various rituals in order to dupe Kamalakar by stating that 12 kilograms of gold could be found under the ground of his house. Prakash handed over the funds by selling his property.

Suresh Kumar requested the public not to trust the self-styled godmen and to practice superstitious beliefs. He commended Wankidi police for showing spontaneity in arresting the three and recovering the full amount from the accused. Additional SP Acheshwar Rao, Asifabad Srinivas, Wankidi Inspector D Sudhakar, Sub-Inspector Deekonda Ramesh were present.
