Sangareddy: Three students sustained injuries while around 70 others had a narrow escape when the dilapidated building of Telangana State Residential School-cum-Junior College collapsed at Lingampally in Munipally mandal on Tuesday afternoon.
The three injured students were walking close to a wall when it gave way. They suffered minor injuries as the debris fell on them. The students were immediately shifted to the government hospital in Zaheerabad, where their condition was said to be stable.
Staff members had repeatedly drawn the attention of higher officials to the poor condition of the building, but no action was taken. More than 70 students usually slept in the room every night. Officials and locals said the collapse could have been a major tragedy had it occurred at night.
Following heavy rains in August, the building’s condition had deteriorated further, eventually leading to its collapse. Former Andole MLA Chanti Kranthi blamed official negligence for the incident and demanded that the government immediately identify all dilapidated school buildings in the district, demolish them, and construct new facilities to prevent such accidents.
The incident left the students on the campus in shock. Belongings, including notebooks, textbooks, and uniforms, were damaged in the collapse.
