Hyderabad: Tilak Varma, Hyderabad’s brightest hope to play across all three formats, shared that his recent county stint with Hampshire provided invaluable lessons, which he hopes to carry forward for life.
The 22-year-old elegant southpaw mentioned that growing up, he dreamt of playing English county cricket, and that dream was fulfilled during his time with Hampshire.
As the Hyderabad captain, Varma will lead the South Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy championship, starting August 28 in Bengaluru. However, if he is selected for the Asia Cup T20 to be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28**, he will miss the Duleep Trophy.
In his Instagram post, Varma reflected, “My first experience with the red ball here, along with the ODI games, taught me lessons I will carry for life, not just as a cricketer but as a person. Thank you, Hampshire.”
For the record, Tilak played seven matches for Hampshire across different formats. He scored 412 runs, including two centuries and two half-centuries, with a highest score of 112. This was part of his preparation to play for India, particularly with an eye on the Test format.
Having already represented India in T20 Internationals and scored two centuries, Tilak earned praise from Hampshire’s management for his contributions this season.
Hampshire’s social media posted, “From his maiden red-ball century to those sublime innings in Hampshire colours, he’s shown exactly why he’s one of cricket’s brightest talents.”
They further added, “Beyond the statistics, it’s been Tilak’s character and warmth that have truly impressed everyone at Utilita Bowl. He’s embraced Hampshire cricket with open arms. Thank you for the magic, Tilak. Once a Hampshire player, always part of the family.”
