Hyderabad: In a short span of just a few months, Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS), Gachibowli, has become a much sought after government facility for Covid positive patients in Telangana.

With a total strength of 1,261 beds, the TIMS, which earlier was a sports village to host sportspersons, has emerged as a Covid only healthcare facility for patients in search of an efficient government hospital and also for those who cannot afford the costs involved in private hospitals.

While the patient load is heavy during the second wave of the Covid infections, the hospital has been providing treatment to patients from across Telangana and even from neighboring States including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, AP and Karnataka. There are close to 700 Covid positive patients who are admitted to TIMS out of which 430 patients are receiving oxygen support and nearly 190 patients are on ventilators. The TIMS is also the only healthcare facility in Telangana that offers 843 hospital beds equipped with oxygen support.

Senior hospital authorities have said that almost all the critical cases that get referred to TIMS from private hospitals, arrive at a highly advanced stage of disease progression. The doctors manning the ICUs hardly get enough time to revive such patients.

At present, there are 260 doctors, 266 nurses, 130 workers employed in the ancillary services and another 260 para medical staff to take care of the patients at TIMS. The State government is making all out efforts to fill-up another 200 vacant posts, which would further improve the medical services,” hospital officials said.

Unlike other hospitals that have wards, the TIMS hospital has dedicate rooms for Covid patients. The 14-floor structure has been renovated in such a way that two-patients share a single room. The healthcare status of the patients is tracked 24-hours by doctors and nurses at the hospital.

“While handling such a large number of Covid positive patients in a hospital, there are bound to be some teething troubles. Improving healthcare facilities and other allied services is a continuous process at TIMS,” senior health officials said.

Quick facts about TIMS

  • The hospital has 1,261 beds in total with 843 beds having oxygen support and 137 ventilators
  • 160 doctors, 266 nurses, 266 paramedical staff and 130 employees in ancillary services
  • At present, there are 700 Covid positive patients under treatment at TIMS
  • All the ventilators at TIMS are filled
  • 190 more vacant posts of senior doctors, paramedics, nurses and other staff to be recruited
