Tirupati: The Tirupati airport in Renigunta was flooded with rain water, forcing the officials to stop landing of flights at the airport on Thursday. Heavy rains lashed Chittoor district since Wednesday night resulting in overflowing of lakes and streams and the Kalyani reservoir reached its full level. The government has declared a holiday for schools on Friday as a precautionary measure.
The temple city appeared like a huge lake as water entered the railway underbridges. Traffic was paralysed at the main road junctions with the roads submerged under water. Tirumala hills is also experiencing incessant rains and there were landslides on the second ghat road. The Tirumala temple, the roads leading to the temple, cottages and other places remained waterlogged
and devotees had a testing time.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam already closed the two walk-ways uphill and kept a vigil over the ghat roads in the wake of rains. Barricades were also erected at danger points and cranes were kept ready to meet any eventuality. The situation is likely to get worse with more rains forecast due to depression in the south-west of Bay of Bengal.
