Hyderabad: Two Africans who allegedly cheated a man from the city of Rs.1.80 lakh after taking money from him promising Tocilizumab injections, were arrested by the Hyderabad Cybercrime police on Thursday.
The arrested persons were Jaff Declan (35), a native of Cameroon and Mathias Shah (33), a Tanzanian. The two, with the help of two locals, had posted contact details on a popular website posing as suppliers of medicines. A man from the Charminar area contacted them over phone for Tocilizumab injections used to treat Covid-19 patietns, and as per the advice of one Rakesh Prasad Kandewal, an agent for the two foreigners, transferred Rs1,80,774 to an account provided by them. The account belonged to one Amjed Khan who after taking a commission handed over the ATM card to Rakesh who in turn gave it to the two foreigners, P Narendar Reddy, Sub-inspector (Hyderabad Cybercrimes), said.
After collecting the amount, the foreigners switched off their mobile phones. The victim had needed the injections for a relative who was undergoing treatment for Covid-19. However, with the injection not being given, the patient died. Following a complaint from the victim, the police booked a case and tracked down the two foreigners in Bengaluru, from where they were arrested.
