Hyderabad: Toddy adulteration kills one more; 53 hospitalised

Number of individuals falling sick from adulterated toddy continued to increase and reached 34 at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences and 19 at Gandhi Hospital

Hyderabad: The toll from consuming adulterated toddy rose to four with the death of a 70-year-old man, identified as Gangaram from Addagutta, at Gandhi Hospital during the early hours of Friday. Doctors, however, maintained the exact cause of Gangaram’s death could only be ascertained after post-mortem.

Meanwhile, the number of individuals falling sick from adulterated toddy continued to increase and reached 34 at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and 19 at Gandhi Hospital.

“Nine patients are undergoing dialysis and two patients may need dialysis. About 11 patients are in stable condition while 12 more are clinically stable but require more observation,” NIMS Medical Superintendent said on Friday.

Out of the 15 admitted to Gandhi Hospital, two patients are on dialysis and 13 patients are in stable condition. The hospital doctors said that there are 19 cases of toddy adulteration undergoing treatment and of them, one patient left the hospital against medical advice.

Excise official suspended

The Prohibition and Excise Department officials have placed Balanagar Excise Inspector Venu Kumar under suspension in connection with the adulterated toddy incident on Friday.

As per available information, after a departmental inquiry about the negligence and laxity on part of the officer in the incident, he was suspended. Meanwhile, at least five other officials in the police station are also under scrutiny.

On Tuesday, more than 30 people fell ill allegedly after consuming adulterated toddy at toddy compounds in Kukatpally.
