Hyderabad: With the monsoon this year being quite active over the capital city, the rainfall figures in Hyderabad have surpassed annual normal, with the heavy rains still continuing.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the rainfall in Hyderabad from January 1 till October 13 was 102 cm, against the normal annual rainfall of 82 cm. Interestingly, the rainfall in Hyderabad till July was around 50 cm, which means, in the next two and a half months, the city recorded another 50 cm. With still over two months left for this year, the Met Department is expecting the annual rainfall to go up further.

Even at Hakimpet, which recorded a deficit rainfall in August, the rainfall has almost reached annual figures with 81 cm against a normal annual rainfall of 87 cm.

Hanamkonda records highest rainfall

There are 12 weather stations in the State where the rainfall is recorded on a day-to-day basis. The data from these stations suggest that Hanamkonda recorded double rainfall this year with 188 cm against the normal rainfall of 82 cm, followed by Bhadrachalam (182 cm) and Medak (141 cm).

Incessant rains in Hyderabad

Normal life was disrupted in the city for the fourth day on the trot with incessant rainfall inundating several roads and areas.

The rains, which began on a sedate note on Saturday, have gained in strength over the last three days, with Tuesday witnessing strong outbursts intermittently, with the showers continuing in most parts of the city, accompanied by lightning and thunder in some areas as well, late into the night.

The GHMC’s Disaster Response Force (DRF) and the Traffic Police had a tough time in clearing waterlogged points and regulating the traffic. Following the heavy rains, the movement of traffic was affected across the city.

As for the statistics, several parts recorded heavy rainfall with Abdullahpurmet receiving 11 cm till 6 pm, followed by Uppal (9.2cm), Cherlapalli (8.1cm) and Alwal (7.8cm) while the average rainfall in the GHMC limits was 3.6 cm, according to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS).

Heavy rain to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at many places with heavy to very heavy rain at some places till Wednesday, after which the intensity of the rains could subside slightly, weather officials said.

According to the TSDPS, a deep depression over the west central Bay of Bengal had crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coasts close to Kakinada on Tuesday. It was expected to move west-northwestwards and weaken into a depression and further weaken into well marked low pressure area. Under its influence enhanced rainfall activity was expected over the State till Wednesday.

According to the IMD’s impact based weather forecast, there could be water pooling on roads and low-lying areas in many places along with traffic congestion on Wednesday. There is also a possibility of wet and slippery roads and drainage clogging, it added.
