Hyderabad: With the State government set to introduce English medium instruction from first to eighth standards in government schools from the next academic year, bilingual text books would be supplied free, Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy said on Friday.

Under this initiative, the Education department will conduct special training programme for teachers from March 14, she said during question hour in the State Assembly here.

She said English medium instruction would be introduced as part of the Mana Ooru-Mana Badi programme that was launched by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on March 8.

Under Phase I, the programme would be implemented in schools which have high student strength, and 9,123 schools with high student strength had been identified across the State, the Minister said.

The government will spend Rs.3, 497.62 crore under Phase I for improving infrastructure and ensuring comprehensive development of schools, she said, replying to TRS MLA Ravi Shankar Sunke.

The infrastructure development includes 12 different components like toilets, drinking water supply, green chalk boards, among other facilities, in the schools. To monitor the works being taken up in the schools, a special software was introduced and officials would be uploading all the details of the works, the Minister said.
