Hyderabad: Tweets in support of Disha Ravi, a Bangalore-based Climate activist have been pouring in since she was taken into custody by Delhi police on Sunday for allegedly sharing ‘toolkit’ reinforcing farmers’ protest with Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. Two others, Nikita Jacob and Shantanu were also sent non-bailable warrants in connection with the case.
Delhi Cyber Police officials claim that the ‘toolkit’ was created by Nikita Jacob and Shantanu and also alleged that they have joined a zoom meeting organized by pro-Khalistan group, and Jacob was one of the editors for ‘toolkit’.
Twitterati feels that it is an outright attack on freedom of expression and is going all out with tweets extending support to Disha Ravi using hashtags like #FreeDishaRavi, #JusticeforDisha and #ReleaseDishaRavi.
Several activists and politicians including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind kejriwal, DMK MP Kanimozhi, and Meena Harris, daughter of newly elected US Vice-President Kamala Harris, have extended their support in the form of tweets to Disha Ravi.
Arresting a young woman for retweeting a tweet supporting the farmers is undemocratic. I stand with Disha Ravi against this onslaught on freedom of expression #FreeDishaRavi#IndiaBeingSilenced
Indian officials have arrested another young female activist, 21 yo Disha Ravi, because she posted a social media toolkit on how to support the farmers’ protest. Read this thread about the sequence of events and ask why activists are being targeted and silenced by the government. https://t.co/ycUgDEqwdF
