Jamshedpur: Two miscreants who allegedly looted gold jewellery worth over Rs 1 crore from Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district were arrested from neighbouring West Bengal, a police officer said.

On June 30 miscreants had looted gold jewellery and cash from 70-year-old jeweller Arun Kumar Nandi’s Chakulia home and fled towards West Bengal. A case in this connection was registered under relevant sections of BNS.

On the directive of Senior Superintendent of Police Piyush Pandey, a special raid team headed by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Ghatsila) was formed under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rishabha Garg to investigate and initiate necessary action to apprehend the perpetrators.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Garg said the team conducted a raid jointly with its West Bengal counterparts in Jhargram district and tried to intercept a motorcyclist with two pillion riders near Bada Banshol, Porhati under Jamboni police station on Tuesday.

All the three persons, however, made an abortive attempt to flee in different directions on seeing the police abandoning the two-wheeler, the SP said. Police gave a chase and arrested two persons identified as Md Rafique, a native of Rafiganj police station of Aurangabad district in Bihar but living currently in Chandil police station of Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharswan district, and Niranjan Goud, a resident of Bagbeda police station in Jamshedpur while one accused managed to escape.

Police have recovered a total of 1,340.720 gm of stolen jewellery stuffed in a bag, a knife used in the crime, a mobile phone from their possession, the SP added.

On the lead provided by Rafique, the SP said police also seized a country-made pistol and a live cartridge used in the crime. Further raids were on to apprehend other accused at large, Garg added.
