Two held with 77,700 prescription tablets, 170 cough syrup bottles in Hyderabad

Hyderabad CCS and Habeeb Nagar Police arrested two persons for allegedly illegally selling prescription medicines and cough syrup. Police seized 77,700 tablets and 170 bottles of cough syrup worth around Rs 10 lakh, while six other suspects remain absconding.

HYDERABAD: The Special Crime Team of the Central Crime Station (CCS), Hyderabad, in coordination with Habeeb Nagar Police, on Saturday apprehended two persons for allegedly possessing a large quantity of prescription medicines and cough syrup intended for illegal sale in the city.

The arrested persons were identified as Mohammed Sarvar alias Raheem (30), a driver from Mangar Basthi, Afzal Sagar, Mallepally, and Mohammed Rabbani (32), a band master from Afzal Sagar, Mallepally. Six other suspects from Hyderabad and Bidar are absconding.


According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes) M Srinivas, during the operation, police seized 77,700 tablets comprising 49,200 NitraZohm-10 tablets, 18,300 Nitcor-10 tablets and 10,200 Nitravet-10 tablets, along with 170 bottles of Choco cough syrup (100 ml). The total value of the seized medicines is estimated at around Rs 10 lakh.

According to the official, the suspects allegedly procured the medicines from suppliers in Bidar and sold them illegally in Hyderabad without any authorisation. Habitual offenders were purchasing the tablets and cough syrup, persons intending to commit crimes, the official said.

He said the seized medicines are prescription drugs meant for treating conditions such as insomnia, chest pain, and certain seizure disorders, while the cough syrup is intended for treating dry cough and the common cold. Misuse of these medicines can cause dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, impaired coordination, and rapid heartbeat.
