Hyderabad: Two persons were injured in a reactor explosion in a pharmaceutical company at Jeedimetla on Wednesday morning. The incident happened at the Nasense Laboratory Private Limited around 8 am, when about 50 workers were present. “Two persons who were close to the reactor suffered burn injuries following the explosion. Other workers managed to rush out in time before the fire spread,” said B Sudhakar Rao, Divisional Fire Officer, Kukatpally.
There were 20 reactors in the company. “Only one reactor exploded, triggering a fire on the premises,” he said, adding that four fire tenders were rushed in from nearby fire stations to the IDA Jeedimetla where the company was located. The fire personnel exercised caution as a large amount of sodium was also stored in the factory. “If sodium comes in contact with water, there would have been a major explosion. We managed to prevent further explosions,” Rao said.
Firemen wearing fire proximity suits managed to get inside the factory and sprayed foam to put out the fire. It took nearly three hours to bring the fire under control with the help of the local factory security staff and the Jeedimetla police. Senior officials of the Fire Department also rushed to the spot. The Jeedimetla police have booked a case after the CLUES team inspected the premises.
Officials of the Factories Department too visited the spot in the afternoon and inspected the premises. A huge crowd including family members of workers had gathered at the company following reports of the explosion. The police had a tough time controlling the crowd. Earlier this month, a woman died and two other women were injured when a fire broke out at a furniture manufacturing unit in the same industrial area.
