Jeddah: A UAE national was arrested in Dubai for stealing a newborn camel to gift it to his girlfriend and lying to police about how he got the animal.
The Dubai Police were alerted about the theft two weeks ago by dromedary’s owners who reported that a young camel had been stolen from their farm.
During the investigation, the accused, who owned a farm in the area, was worried he would be caught and sought to cover his tracks. He called police to report that a young camel had accidentally wandered on to his farm.
Brig Abdullah Al Mosam, director of Bur Dubai Police Station, said they immediately suspected the man because his farm was about three km away from the other farm and was separated by a motorway – a journey that would have been impossible for a newborn camel to undertake, according to local media reports.
Upon further questioning, the man confessed that he stole the camel, which belongs to a rare breed and is very expensive, to present as a gift for his girlfriend on her birthday. Police referred the accused and his girlfriend to the public prosecution.
