Ultra modern Virus Research Lab inaugurated in Khammam

Khammam: A state-of-the-art Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) has come up in the district for diagnosis and identification of viruses during outbreaks of epidemics. The VRDL established at Government District Headquarters Hospital here was inaugurated by Transport Minister, Puvvada Ajay Kumar on Monday. He said the government allotted the laboratory to Khammam for speedy and accurate diagnosis of viral diseases.
Ajay Kumar stated that the facility besides ensuring timely diagnosis and identification of mutating viruses would generate data about viral diseases for facilitating quick deployment of resources and measures to save human lives.
The laboratory was equipped with ultra-modern equipment such as bio-safety cabinet, automated nucleic acid extraction centrifuge, real-time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) machine and others with serology, PCR, general and culture wings, the minister said.
The VRDL could analyse around 600 to 800 samples a day. RT-PCR machine at the laboratory could give precise test results of Covid-19 and thus it helps to isolate those tested positive to stop transmission of the coronavirus, Ajay Kumar noted.
SUDA Chairman, Bachu Vijay Kumar, Mayor P Neeraja, District Library Chairman MA Qamar, Collector, VP Gautham, DM&HO. Dr B Malathi, District Hospital Superintendent, Dr. B Venkateshwarlu, TRS district party office in-charge, Gundala Krishna and others were present.
