Hyderabad: Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia assured complete support for the expansion and development of Hyderabad International Airport in the wake of increasing passenger traffic to Hyderabad from various countries even as Telangana is emerging as an economic hub in the country. He also promised to take necessary steps to set up six more airports as requested by the State government.

The Union Minister who was in Hyderabad to participate in various development programmes, met the Chief Minister at Pragathi Bhavan here on Saturday as a courtesy call. On the occasion, the Chief Minister hosted a lunch in honour of the Union Minister.


During the meeting, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao requested the Union Minister to further improve air connectivity from Hyderabad International Airport to various countries as Telangana State was developing into an economic growth centre and Hyderabad was emerging into an international city. He brought to the notice of the Union Minister that Telangana including Hyderabad continues to grow as a business hub, IT hub, health hub and tourism hub. Under these circumstances, he emphasised the need to take measures to increase direct flight connectivity from Hyderabad to Southeast Asia, Europe and the US as travelers are arriving from various parts of the country as well as various international cities.

He also wanted the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to take immediate steps and provide necessary support for the development of six airports in various towns proposed by the State government. He also sought immediate measures to provide metro rail connectivity to Hyderabad Airport.

Responding to the requests from the State government, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said Hyderabad international airport needs further development and expansion keeping in view of the future needs. He assured complete support in this regard. He explained that the Airport Authority of India will take measures commence ATR operations from Warangal (Mamunur) airport, one of the six proposed airports in Telangana. Further, technical clearance will be given for the Jakranpalli airport in Nizamabad district. He also said that his ministry would examine and monitor establishment of an airport at Adilabad district with support from the Indian Air Force. The Union Minister assured the Chief Minister that for the landing and take off of small aircrafts at Pedapalli (Basanth Nagar), Kothagudem, Devarakadra (Mahbubnagar), the matter would be re-examined and necessary action would be taken.

Ministers KT Rama Rao, Vemula Prashanth Reddy, Mohd Mahmood Ali, MP J Santosh Kumar, G Ranjith Reddy, Government Chief Advisor Rajiv Sharma, Union Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola and Joint Secretary Amber Dubey, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, Special Chief Secretary (Finance) K Ramakrishna Rao, Special Chief Secretary (Transport) Sunil Sharma, CM Principal Secretary S Narsing Rao, Secretaries Smita Sabharwal, Rajsekhar Reddy, GMR Group Chairman Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao and others participated.
