Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) Students Union, along with other student organisations, staged a protest on the campus on Wednesday over what it termed the ‘arbitrary dissolution’ of the union before completion of its tenure and demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision.
According to the protesters, who staged a dharna at the UoH Administrative Building, the university dissolved the union without following proper procedures such as calling for the University General Body Meeting (UGBM). The Students Union questioned why the decision was made before it could complete its activities and hold the UGBM.
In a meeting with the Dean of Students Welfare (DSW), all the student organisations except ABVP unanimously decided to allow the union to complete its term, the union said in a statement. However, the university administration, ignoring the consensus of the student community, took the decision in favour of ABVP and for its own political interests, it alleged.
“This is not only a direct attack on the autonomy of the students, but also an attempt to abolish the elected representative body and remove the main platform for democratic student representation,” the union said.
The Students Union demanded that the university respect and implement the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations and refrain from political bias and favouritism.
