Hyderabad: In a step towards digitising transport services, the Transport Department is planning to roll out the Vahan portal soon, bringing vehicle-related services under a single online platform.

The system is expected to be first introduced on a pilot basis at the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in Secunderabad before being expanded to all RTOs across Hyderabad.

At present, driving licence services are being delivered through the Sarathi portal. On similar lines, the Vahan portal will handle as many as 52 vehicle-related services, making processes more transparent and accessible.

According to official estimates, nearly 89 lakh vehicles are registered within the Greater Hyderabad (GH) limits, and all their records will be transferred or updated to the new system.

Once implemented, every new vehicle purchased will be registered on the Vahan portal before delivery to the customer. This is expected significantly reduce the need for vehicle owners to visit RTA offices in person.

The initial phase will cover showroom-based registrations, followed by a phased inclusion of all other services. Interstate and inter-district vehicle transfers are also expected to become simpler, as the system will eliminate the need for separate No Objection Certificates (NOCs). Ownership transfers will be processed online after an application is submitted.

The portal is also expected to aid in tracking vehicles involved in accidents or theft cases by providing faster access to records. Services such as renewal of driving licences, issue of duplicate licences, change of address, vehicle transfers, permits and payment of fees will be available online.

However, applicants will still have to appear in person for learner’s licence tests, driving tests and vehicle fitness inspections.

Transport officials expected the move would improve efficiency, cut down paperwork and enhance public convenience across the city.
