Hyderabad: One of the finest sports journalists ever from India, S Thyagarajan, passed away in Chennai on Monday. He was 85 and survived by his wife and two daughters.

Thyagarajan, who worked with ‘The Hindu’ for close to six decades and an authority on many disciplines, especially hockey, had covered many Olympics and Asian Games besides most of the major international hockey events. He was a regular at many of the hockey World Cups and rarely missed any Senior national hockey championship during his illustrious career.

The distinguished sports journalist was also on the International Hockey Federation media panel for a long time.

Former Olympian hockey players N. Mukesh Kumar, Alloysius Edwards, and veteran athlete Prabhakar Rao conveyed condolences.
