Hyderabad: Days of humans collecting blood from patients could be numbered! In a milestone in medical technology, the AI robotic system named Aletta has begun officially performing blood draws in European hospitals, entirely without human intervention.

The development is quite a significant shift in clinical procedures, as it has replaced the traditional phlebotomist with high-precision artificial intelligence (AI).

Equipped with AI-driven ultrasound vision, the robotic arm maps a patient’s veins beneath the skin in mere milliseconds. With surgical accuracy, the machine aligns the needle, completes the draw, retracts, and even applies a bandage, all in one seamless motion.

A physician from Los Angeles (LA), California, United States, Afshine Emrani (@afshineemrani) in one of his posts on X said that the results of a robotic system drawing blood in place of a human (phlebotomist) are challenging long-held assumptions about the necessity of human touch in healthcare.

“Despite the automated nature of the procedure, 98 percent of patients reported they would choose the robot again, citing the elimination of missed veins, repeat sticks, and human error,” he noted.

The breakthrough presents a profound paradox for the medical industry. “In the United States alone, approximately 130,000 phlebotomists are employed in this field. For years, medicine was viewed as a sanctuary where human empathy and steady hands were considered irreplaceable. The line between human care and algorithmic precision is gone,” Dr Emrani on X posted.

The success of Aletta has the potential to trigger a transition in how routine tasks are handled in hospitals. The fact that AI systems can draw blood flawlessly also raises a difficult conversation about future jobs in the medical sector.
