Hyderabad: Young talented batter Thakur Tilak Varma hit a stroke-filled century while Chandan Sahani smashed a quickfire 87 as Hyderabad crushed Delhi by 79 runs to record their second straight victory in the Group C Vijay Hazare match at the IS Bindra Cricket Stadium, Mohali, on Thursday.
Tilak Varma hit eight sixes and seven boundaries in his 123-ball 139 while Chandan Sahani smashed 87 off 74 with the help of seven sixes and five boundaries to guide Hyderabad to 325/6 in 50 overs. Later, left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan scalped three for 33 while senior pacer CV Milind picked up two for 58 to restrict Delhi 246/9 in 50 overs. Debutant pacer Kartikeya Kat too impressed with a fine spell of 2/28.
Asked to bat first, in-form skipper Tanmay Agarwal was bowled cheaply in the seventh over before Akshath Redy and Tilak Varma added 49 runs for the second wicket. After Akshath’s departure in the 18th over and then Kolla Sumanth in 23rd over, Tilak Varma joined hands with Chandan Sahani to add 152 runs for the fourth wicket. Sahani, who made his debut against Haryana on Wednesday, showed great maturity and took the experienced Delhi bowlers to cleaners.
Sahani, after a steady start, took on the bowlers and reached his half-century in 48 deliveries to take the team past 200-run mark. Playing a self-less innings, Sahani went after the bowlers. However, against the run of play, he was dismissed in the 43rd over. At the other end, Tilak reached his three-figure mark in 106 deliveries. He took Hyderabad past 300 before being dismissed in the 49th over.
Later, pacer Kartikeya struck vital blows scalping both the openers. He opened his wicket tally with Indian team opener Shikhar Dhawan when Sahani took a diving catch at the covers in the fourth over. Kartikeya then dismissed another opener Dhruv Shorey in his next over. This time too it was Sahani who took the catch at the deep square leg. With openers back in the pavilion inside six overs, the target for Delhi was always a tough task. Hyderabad bowlers took wickets at the regular intervals to take the match away from Delhi.
