Vinod Kumar urges MEA to address issues of Gulf migrants

Hyderabad: Telangana State Planning Board Vice-Chairman B Vinod Kumar on Friday requested the Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to address the issues of Gulf migrants, especially inmates in prisons who are facing criminal charges, and extend legal help. He also asked the Ministry to look into other issues, including non-payment of their wages.
Vinod interacted with Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Rajashekhar from the Union Ministry of External Affairs in the presence of Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar and other senior IAS officers.
The States Division of MEA has been specifically mandated to help States and Union Territories to be integral partners in India’s international engagements.
During the interaction, the State government sought the Centre’s help to strengthen the help desk in the State to help citizens of Telangana around the world in real-time.
The desk is also meant to serve people — especially those who are wrongfully confined — extend legal assistance and other help through the Indian Community Welfare Fund. It was also suggested to emulate best practices from States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
