Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam, the biggest city in Andhra Pradesh and proposed to become the executive capital of the state, will be part of the smallest district under the same name, thanks to reconstitution of the districts.

After the reconstitution of the 13 districts comprising 25 Lok Sabha and 175 Assembly constituencies, 51 Revenue divisions and 670 mandals, the extent of Visakhapatnam district is now reduced to only over 928 sq. km. with just two revenue divisions–the newly formed Bheemunipatnam and Visakhapatnam comprising ten mandals and the six Assembly segments of Bheemunipatnam, Vizag East, Vizag North, Vizag West, Vizag South and Gajuwaka. Also, the population covered is only 18.13 lakh.

Prakasam district has emerged as the biggest district in the state on an area of 14,322 sq.km., while populationwise, Kurnool with 23.66 lakh will be the biggest. The newly formed Alluri Seetharama Raju district comprising only three Assembly segments of Paderu, Araku and Rampachodavaram and the two revenue divisions of Paderu and Rampachodavaram, accounts for the lowest population at 9.54 lakh.

The state government has also proposed to increase the 51 revenue divisions by ten to 12 new divisions. At present, Madanapalle revenue division with 33 mandals in Chittoor district is the biggest.
