Warangal: In protest against the alleged intimidation tactics by Congress leaders, journalists from the Warangal (East) constituency staged a flash protest at Pochamma Maidan junction here on Wednesday.
The protesting journalists complained that followers of Wardhannapet MLA KR Nagaraju had burnt an effigy of an electronic media organisation that telecast a news story a couple of days ago related to certain affairs in the MLA’s constituency.
They condemned the aggression allegedly shown by the MLA’s followers against the ‘Fourth Estate’ and demanded an apology from Nagaraju. Warangal East Journalists’ Parapathi Sangham president Koppula Narendar warned that such incidents had occurred four times already and stated that they would not tolerate attempts to suppress press freedom or intimidate the media.
Leaders of journalists’ associations expressed outrage, stating that if there were objections to news reports, there were legal avenues to address them, and burning effigies was not in line with democratic traditions.
The protesters made it clear that the government bears full responsibility for the safety of journalists and vowed not to halt their protests until the MLA apologises. Senior journalists Navanith Goud, Perumalla Madhusudhan Goud, Velagandala Ajay Kumar, Lingabattini Krishna and others were present.
