Warangal: Confusion prevailed at MGM Hospital mortuary after police handed over the wrong body to the family of a construction worker, Kumara Swamy, on Friday. It was later discovered that Kumara Swamy was alive and undergoing treatment.

The mix-up began when two injured persons were brought to the hospital on July 9 — one found on the Warangal–Khammam highway and another from a railway track. The railway accident victim died during treatment.

Kumara Swamy’s family was informed of his “death” and identified the railway victim’s body as his. The body was taken to Mylaram village for final rites. However, just before the funeral, his daughter noticed a tattoo on the body’s hand — a mark Kumara Swamy didn’t have.

The body was returned to the mortuary, and a day later, officials confirmed that Kumara Swamy was alive and the deceased was the unidentified railway accident victim.

Authorities said the mix-up happened at the MGM mortuary when policemen on duty mistakenly handed over the wrong body. A probe is underway into the lapse.

Meanwhile, the challenge now is to establish the identity of the deceased, who remains unidentified.
