Hyderabad: Students of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Armed Forces Preparatory Degree College, Bibinagar, once hailed as the first degree college in the country to train women for armed forces, on Monday participated in massive protests against the State government’s proposal to shift the institution to Ghatkesar.
Students besieged Joint Secretary, TGSWREIS, Sharadha, who was on a day’s visit to the colleges. They raised slogans and alleged that the college will face existential crisis if shifted to Ghatkesar where already three social welfare residential institutions are operating in one premises.
The students expressed their concerns over the quality of training once the four institutions i.e. Armed Forces Preparatory Degree College, Social Welfare Degree College for Women Budvel and Mahendra Hills, and Gurukul School Jagathgiri Gutta – operating in one premises
They lamented that their purpose of joining the institution to train for armed forces will be defeated due to lack of proper facilities in the present college premises.
Around 1,400 girl students, including 350 from armed forces preparatory degree college will have to pursue academics under one premises. Due to lack of enough dormitories, the classrooms are being repurposed as sleeping quarters at night, sources said, adding that there is also an issue with insufficient washroom facilities.
On Monday, TGSWREIS on a statement said that the State government took a decision to extend military training, which is currently limited to armed forces preparatory degree college for women students, to students of social welfare institutions Budvel, Mahendra Hills and Jagadgirigutta.
However, it is learnt that the building owner of armed forces preparatory college served a notice to the college administration over pending rent and asked to vacate. Further, it is also learnt the trainers in college have not been paid for the last five months.
“TGSWREIS is working with an aim to further strengthen the college, providing more opportunities to students to enter armed forces,” the release said.
