When we hear of ‘SpongeBob Square Pants’, the complete song starts playing in our head, doesn’t it? And that is how connected we are with the cartoon show. Now, imagine seeing them exist in real life!
Marine biologist Christopher Mah recently saw a bright yellow sea sponge next to a pink sea star under the deep Atlantic ocean – and they looked exactly like the two animated friends.
“I normally avoid these refs (references),” Mah said on Twitter. “But WOW. REAL LIFE SpongeBob and Patrick!(sic)”
Watch:
The sea star is known as a Chondraster and is characterised by its five arms covered with tiny suckers. Chondraster stars can appear as a dark pink, light pink, or white.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Okeanos Explorer made the discovery around 1,885 m inside the Atlantic Ocean on an underwater mountain called the Retriever Seamount while on an expedition recently. The mountain is about 200 miles of New York City’s coast.
The photo was captured by a remotely-operated Okeanos Explorer ship, which maps the vast oceans and explores life that lies beneath the surface.
However, the real-life versions of the beloved cartoon characters are not as friendly as they appear in the show. Mah said the Patrick-like sea star saw the sponge more as prey than a friend.
In a tweet Mah said, “Here is Chondraster feeding on a sponge! (not the yellow “Spongebob” one though).” He also tweeted a link to footage from a previous expedition.
