Hyderabad: With water levels rising in the Himayat Sagar, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) opened one gate of the reservoir on Tuesday. Two more are likely to be opened later in the evening.
Earlier, HMWSSB managing director Dana Kishore had announced that the gates of Himayat Sagar would be opened any time after 4 pm. The Water Board also issued a red alert, which is usually issued when the water level touches 1,762.75 feet and the gates are opened if the level goes up to 1,763 feet. On Tuesday, the water level at the reservoir was recorded at 1,762.80 feet against the FTL of 1,763.50 feet.
Rains that have been lashing the city and its surrounding areas for more than a week have resulted in heavy inflows into the Himayat Sagar. The HMWSSB is coordinating with the the Revenue department, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the police to relocate the people in downstream areas.
